Innovative patient information on cholesteatoma

The project ‘Innovative patient information on cholesteatoma’ by Erasmus MC and Stichting Beterketen ensures better information for patients with cholesteatoma, a chronic ear infection.

The challenge

A cholesteatoma is a tenacious form of chronic ear infection. The condition occurs when the eardrum grows inwards. As there is no medication to remedy this, an operation is always necessary.

Although complications are rare these days, it’s important that patients properly understand what the surgery involves and the possible risks. The complex structure of the ear means it’s often difficult to explain this.

Our support

Immunis Foundation supported a pilot project of Erasmus MC and Stichting Beterketen that helps patients to understand better what’s happening in their ear. Our contribution was used to develop medical animations giving a step-by-step explanation of the disease process and the operation. This means patients receive clear, visual information and they are able to start the procedure with greater confidence.
